The audio guestbook is the wedding trend of the moment: a vintage phone on a table, guests pick up, hear a greeting, and leave a message after the beep. Years later you replay your grandmother's voice, the best man's laughter, a cousin's clumsy toast. Here is how it works, what it really involves, and how to offer one without renting any hardware.

How an audio guestbook works

An audio guestbook is an answering machine. Lifting the handset plays a greeting recorded by the couple ("You've reached Léa and Tom's answering machine…"), then a beep, and the guest talks. They hang up and the message is saved. The charm comes from three things:

  • The voice carries what a written note can't: emotion, accents, laughter in the background.
  • The gesture of picking up an old phone delights every generation, kids included.
  • The surprise: the couple only discovers the messages after the party, like coming home to a blinking answering machine.

A physical phone is a lovely prop. An answering machine built into the gallery removes the logistics and leaves no one out: the shy guest who won't speak in front of a queue can record quietly in a corner, or on the way home.

How Photobooth's answering machine works

In Photobooth by labo.gallery, the answering machine is part of the event's guestbook. Guests reach it with the same QR code as the photos, with no app and no account:

  1. They open the answering machine tab and pick up the old phone on screen.
  2. The greeting shows your event's name, then the beep plays.
  3. They talk for up to 2 minutes, with a running counter.
  4. They hang up, can listen back, then send or start over.

By default, voice messages are for the hosts only: guests hear only their own, so the surprise stays intact. One setting makes them playable by everyone. In the admin space you play every message, download it, and delete one if needed. The full flow is on the how it works page.

Getting guests to leave messages

  • Announce it on the mic after dinner: "An answering machine is waiting in the app, leave us a love note or some nonsense."
  • Give a prompt to unlock the shy ones: advice for a long marriage, a memory with the couple, a prediction for your 10th anniversary.
  • Place the QR code near the bar or the photo corner, where guests wait.
  • Remind them the next day: the brunch is perfect for calmer messages.

Guests who prefer writing can sign the same guestbook with a short note, and the photos and videos they drop end up in the same place. To bring every guest photo together, see how to collect wedding photos from guests.

After the wedding

Download every voice message from the admin space and keep them with the photos. Many couples turn them into a short audio montage to replay on each anniversary, or add them to a photo album through a printed QR code. For the full wedding-day setup, see our wedding page.
